This book is about two...
This book is about two friends, George and Harold, who are both in fourth-grade and while they love to cause trouble, the most trouble they cause is due to their comic book based on Captain Underpants. I rated this book highly because I remember being in fourth grade, and if I recall correctly, there were two boys in my class who could have been George and Harold. As a matter of fact, I bet there is a George and Harold in almost every fourth grade. I understand that many parents either like the book or hate the book. As a parent of two boys, I loved the book. I know that some boys have difficulty finding good books to read when they are ready for chapter books. I would not hesitate giving this book to my own boys, hoping it invokes creativty, laughter, and above all a love for books. I recommend this book for my library (medium public library).

George and Harold are two friends…
George and Harold are two friends who write comics together. Their principal (who doesn't like them due to their mischievous nature) ends up believing he's Captain Underpants after the boys try to hypnotize him. The boys spend all day trying to keep him out of trouble. It's a funny story although there were a couple of gross out things that just weren't for me. The bad spelling did bother me. While I understand it, I feel like it's a bad idea to teach kids to write improperly....

    George Beard and Harold Hutchins,…
George Beard and Harold Hutchins, fourth grade pranksters at Jerome Horwitz Elementary, get themselves in deep trouble when on the day of the big football game. They put pepper in the pom-poms of the cheerleaders, pour bubble bath into the marching band's instruments, and fill the football with helium, so that it flies off into the blue at kick off, never to return. Worst of all, their nemesis Mr. Krupp, “the meanest, sourest old principal in the history of” the school has videotaped their pranks. Now they must do everything he tells them to do: behave in class, wash his car, paint his house, and clip his nails, and stop selling their homemade comic book about Captain Underpants, a superhero who fights the bad guys wearing only his cotton briefs and a cape, or face expulsion or something even worse. Krupp threatens to turn the videotape over to the football team. Then the football team will find out who replaced the supply of “Deep-Heating Muscle Rub Lotion with Mr. Prankster's Extra-Scratchy Itching Cream!” George and Harold are forced to beg for mercy. “No!” cried George. “You can't do that. They'll kill us!” “Yeah,” begged Harold, “they'll kill us every day for the rest of our lives!” And so, for the next four to six weeks the two junior miscreants must endure involuntary servitude and bend to whims and dictates of their cruel principal, in addition to being on their best classroom behavior. Until…until the box containing their 3-D Hypno-Ring arrives in the mail. Then under their hypnotic suggestion and a snap of the fingers, Krupp turns into a life size version of their silly superhero Captain Underpants wearing only his tighty-whites and his office curtain as a cape. And adventure ensues including action enhanced by the cheesy animation of FLIP-O-RAMA!

I did read this as a child, but considering its massive spike in popularity recently I decided to read it again. It's still funny and has a lot of charm.

I had mixed feelings about this book. I never read any Captain Underpants books as a child but I recall many boys in my classes reading them. I like how the story is relatable to children. The story is extremely goofy and immature, much like the age that this book is geared towards. Captain Underpants, is made up from the Harold and Georges comics who wears nothing but underwear and Harold and George play ridiculous pranks on their peers. These actions are very engaging for young readers which is probably why these books are so popular. I also like how the comic book illustrations go along with the story line. What I don't like is how the story categorizes the principal as "mean" for giving the students a punishment for their actions. It gives the idea that it's okay to break the rules and if someone punishes you, they're bad. The main idea of this book is to engage the reader in funny gimmicks and entertaining children.

The four star rating for this book is somewhat suspect because, let's be frank, this book wasn't written for me. Many kids, however, would love it! The format of the book is clever (particularly the flip-o-rama) and appealing to kids. It boasts a fairly low reading level (Scholastic's "Book Wizard" gave it a 4th grade reading level but a super harsh 2nd grade interest level) so it would work well for struggling readers. That being said, the 6th grade boys I worked with last year would be rolling on the floor laughing. Give it a try. You don't have to love it in order for kids to. An entertaining pleasure read, it could suck kids in for the long haul.

Grtandson Delighted To Receive This Book!
My 8 year old Grandson was so delighted to receive this book in the mail and finished reading it the same afternoon! Will be sending him more books in this series just to see him step away from video games once in a while.

    In my opinion, this is...
In my opinion, this is a great chapter book for elementary school students to read independently. I like this book for several reasons. The writing is engaging and organized. The story paces well and flows nicely. There are short paragraphs written on each page, with a great amount of dialogue included. Dialogue creates a more interesting storyline that is fun and easy for students to read. An example of dialogue in this story is, "I didn't see you boys at the big game yesterday, said Mr. Krupp. Uh, no, said George. We weren't feelings well. Y-y-yeah, Harold stammered nervously. W-w-we went home." The reader can hear the worry in the character's voices as they talk with their principal, which makes for a good story. I really enjoyed the characters in this book. George and Harold are very believable; they are two young students who perform multiple pranks at their school, bother their principal, and create comic book series involving a superhero. Many school-aged readers can relate to these boys. Principal Krupp is also very believable; he is the evil principal who hates fun. Children may see their own principals as being similar to Mr. Krupp. Fortunately, he turns into a heroic superhero in the end, whom readers would cheer for. The plot is filled with suspense, which creates a very exciting story. George, Harold, and Captain Underpants must rescue a precious crystal from the evil Dr. Diaper and his robots, or else Dr. Diaper will take over the world. Fortunately, they retrieve the crystal and fight off the evil characters. I really enjoyed the action in this story; it made the reading very thrilling. The illustrations enhanced the story and were appropriate to the mood of the story. The pictures are in black in white, but I like that they are not colored because I feel that colored illustrations in this book would be too distracting. The book is supposed to be written like a comic book, so the pencil drawings and shadings are very appropriate. Every page contains extremely animated illustrations. One page reads, "GRAB HIM! Cried George. The two boys skateboarded with all their might toward the speeding van and grabbed Captain Underpants by the ankles. HEEEEEELLLLP they cried as the van pulled them through the city streets." The illustrations on these pages perfectly depict the scene that is occurring. From pages 82 to 97, the book turns into a flip-o-rama, in which the reader flips the pages back and forth very quickly in order to watch the animations of George and Harold fighting the robots. I think this was a great idea for the author to include in the book; it is a clever and exciting way to get readers engaged. The book pushes readers to understand that having fun adventures is a good thing, as long as you are not causing trouble or doing things for the wrong reasons. The big idea of the story is that anyone can be a superhero, even a mean principal and troublemaking children.
