Nice saw
This is a nice saw, I really like the slide lock, the blade stays put, my worries was it would slide with the sawing action, but it locks into place very nicely. The blade does flex and I was surprised by that, I thought these folding saws had a stiff blade, but I was wrong, I'm not sure about other saws as this is the only one I've used. I've been wanting one of these saws to take on my kayak when I run into over brush on small creeks and slow moving waters. in a kayak you need to saw because you have no leverage in the water and I've almost tipped many times. This is exactly what I needed. I found the saw to cut smoothly and easy to use forward and back strokes. I would recommend for any kayaker or camper.

It gets the job done, but there are better
My first impression of this saw was honestly that it was not built well. I like the fact that it slides, but I would feel more comfortable if the black handle was made of metal or at least wrapped in rubber. The feel of the plastic in your hands makes you feel like the handle is going to break in your hand when you are going after a limb. Obviously, I am not out there cutting down huge limbs with this item. However, I do cut through limbs that are about two inches in diameter. It takes this saw a while to get through that! I think it is sharp, but the fact that it is a sliding saw almost makes it tough to say the integrity of this product will last. Now, I know I have been bashing the sliding. But, I do like the fact that it does close up. I don't have to worry about my son coming across this in the garage or worry about the blade if it falls off the shelf for whatever reason. I just think this could've been better made. When you are putting force on something such as a branch/limb, I would just feel better with absolutely any other type of handle (metal, wood, hard rubber). The plastic just does not do it for me. I will continue to use the product because it does work. Hence the 3 star review. However, I just don't feel like I could give this product any more than that based on my experience.

    It's a PULL SAW!
The Gerber Sliding Saw. The short version is that the handle and design are fantastic, but the blade is going to baffle many, many people. And I might as well write this here: This is a PULL saw! So let's start with the design. Taking it out of the package, you're going to love it. It's lightweight, the glass-filled nylon feels excellent in the hand while not being weighty at all. It seems like the perfect pack saw for camping or hunting, nice and compact, nice and lightweight, and the locking mechanism that I've taken a picture of below works flawlessly. A nice round indent that you tighten the locking nut down into. It's never come unlocked on me during use. Now first off, anyone complaining of bending the blade isn't using the tool properly. And I can say that with 100% certainty. Why? Because this blade, like virtually all saws of this style, cuts only on the PULL stroke. Do not push down excessively on the push stroke, all you'll do is risk bending the blade. It does not cut on the push stroke, period. Repeat IT DOES NOT CUT ON THE PUSH STROKE. If anything, I think Gerber needs to put that piece of information right on the packaging because a whole lot of people seem to be attempting to cut like they're using a hand saw, applying force on the push and nothing on the pull. You won't cut squat doing this, you'll get tired, frustrated, and leave a bad review. So how does it work when you use it correctly? Pretty good! Very low effort as you're just dragging the blade across the limb. It's not going to cut as aggressively as say a bow saw with a green wood blade, but that's to be expected. At just over 5 ounces, this thing is a pretty incredible tool to pack along backpacking or camping. And the fact that the nylon handle completely encapsulates the blade with absolutely no sharp edges exposed means your bag and other gear stay safe. And if needed, it does include several lash points so you can take a little paracord and strap it to a limb for added reach. Not something I particularly need, but if you do, it's there. All in all, I do like this saw and recommend it. Just realize it's a pull saw! Have I said that enough? No? Okay once more, it's a pull saw!

    Handy tool
This is a very capable emergency/camp/survival tool that will make a great addition to your go bag or camping/fishing gear. The blade fully retracts into the handle and may be secured in place, avoiding damage to other gear. It is very stable when in use and quite effective. I cut an inch-and-a-half dry cedar limb in less than a minute. I threw it against a tree a couple of times and it showed no damage at all. I also like the wicked looking non-traditional teeth design. The handle is ergonomically designed and fits the hand well. This is a durable tool yet light weight enough to add to your pack with no concerns. I gave my folding saw away. I go wilderness canoeing and backpacking and have no doubt this saw will come in handy on my next outing. Right now I am using it for the small saplings that don't warrant using the chainsaw while clearing the property. It is much handier than the bigger hand-held tree saw. A light coating of machine oil will keep it looking and performing like new during extended outings. I heartily recommend Gerber tools and this is no exception.

Nice, simple, sharp, effedtive and good size.
This is larger than I expected. It works great for trimming branches and will make a good survival saw as well. The blade slides into the glass filled nylon handle and firmly locks on both open and closed position via a large thumbscrew. The handle doesn't look to be indestructible, but should hold up to normal use and abuse quite well. I love the fact that this works great when lashed to a long branch to reach higher limbs.

Rarely would use, but solid saw for camping
This is bigger than expected, I litterally will use for chopping down my invasive arugula plants in aerogarden. I could see this in my survival or doomsday backpack. Very ergonomic and convenient to use for camping. NOT for self defence & this would cut shrubs or twigs. It was alot larger than expected but will come in use when can camp AGAIN.

    Great Little Saw!
I've been using this for a week or so now and it's a great little saw. The blade slides into the handle and stays there when you're not using it. So, it's super safe. It's never exposed until you release the blade and lock it into place with the locking nut. I've been taking it on my walks and using it to prune small tree limbs that hang in the way. It cuts just as good as a real saw. I would recommend using a glove on the hand you're using it with though. Before I knew to start using one, I raised a blister using it. Now I carry a glove in my jacket pocket with it and simply slip it on before I begin sawing. It's quick cutting and efficient. I love it. I'm actually surprised that no one came out with it earlier. It's such a simple but efficient design. I would highly recommend it!

    Great Little Saw
The Gerber Sliding Saw is lightweight, looks sturdy, and has a carbide steel blade with an intriguing tooth configuration. The blade is about 6 1/2" long, is easy to slide out, and locks in place easily in the open or closed position and does not move while sawing. I did not notice any play in it at all, which surprised me. The blade has a slight point on the end, and since it locks in place so securely it looks like it would probably work to shove it through drywall to do a cutout. This gadget is much more solid that some folding saws that I've attempted to use. The blade cuts through small branches and lumbers fairly easily, but is somewhat of a rough cut so it would not be my first choice for finishing work. But if you just need to cut off a small board or a couple of branches and don't want to go and get a big hand saw or a power saw, this little saw will probably get the job done. The nylon handle is lightweight but looks very strong. In short, this is one of those tools that is much better to have in your toolbox than to not have in there. There is a 1/4" hole near the end of the handle that you could use to hang it up above your work bench, but to me this is an Always-Have-On-Hand type of tool.

    Good portable saw
This Gerber saw is a nice little addition to the camping tools, it's light weight and very sharp and will handle small jobs just fine, when your finished with it just slide it back into the sheth and stow it away until next time, no worrie's about the teeth cutting you or other things because of the built in stowing system.

    Lil saw, wicked cutting ability.
My title just about says it all. This is a must item to have as part of your camp gear. It's compact so it will take minimum space and light weight. One of my pictures has a tape measure so you can see the open length 15" as well as the handle length, 9". The blade slides into the handle instead of folding. I like this because I don't have to worry about it folding back onto your hand during use. I wanted to try the saw out before my next camping trip, so I used it to trim my peach tree. It made short work of limbs that were 2-4" in diameter. The handle was comfortable and allowed me to saw at any angle needed. Bottom line, great sturdy tool. Compact, light weight and easy to store.
