Loving the look and easy cleanup
Loving Minwax's waterbased semi-transparent color stain. So many colors to choose from since it's in store tintable, no stinky fumes, and easy to apply. Since it's been raining for 40 days and 40 nights I haven't been able to start my project, an old varnished dresser I need to strip outside that will be used for an island in my white cabinet kitchen. I chose True Black and didn't want it to look like the typical solid painted black cookie cutter finish, this stain is exactly the look I was going for to farmhouse up my bland boring space. With just the tip of my finger dipped in the can, the color and woodgrain came alive on just a cheapo paint stick, so I can just imagine what this stain will do to an old oak dresser! The stain rinsed right off of my finger tip with zero color left on my skin...and did I mention no odor at all- none! I have no doubt my project will turn out beautiful with this color stain, finished off with a coat of Minwax paste wax(because I put that shhhh on everything lol!!!) ...now if I could just find something to turn off the neverending rain- ugh!

Disappointed
I've always used Minwax products for variety of products, color choices and product support. I've used semi transparent wood stain (not water based) and they perform beautifully. This is my first and last time using the gel stain. It is so thick and opaque it is difficult to get a sense of color and wood grain. I'm working with Island Water color (shown as a light gray blue). However the wet gel stain is a bright ultraviolet! It's dry time is very fast. I was applying to a dresser. I applied to all sides then went back to rub off. Was impossible to remove excess. Had to sand again. Reapply stain on one surface at a time. Ok result. Not the color I wanted. The preconditioner turned the wood two to three shades darker. I should have stopped there as that ruined any way of matching the color I had wanted. So disappointed in these two products.

    Good product!
I got this to review and it worked well for me. I found it to have a very watery consistency. I applied it to a smooth finish pine board according to directions. It left a very light tint of color after wiping down. Pictures are just as I applied it before wiping. I may try another coat to see if it darkens a bit

    Not for a beginner
I was super excited to try this as I have a curio cabinet I wanted to update. I love that it can go over something already stained. My experience was mixed. I have included photos of before and after of the inside door of my curio and a raw up stained piece of wood. This wash definitely does better on untainted wood and something without crevices or detail in the wood. My curio door didn't turn out quite as well. When you apply this, against the grain, you need to immediately wipe of the residue. I waited a bit too long on the door and it shows. I tried to sand off the extra and redo, but still not thrilled. It's much harder to be consistent when there is any variation in height or depth with the wood and keeping against the grain. On the other hand, the raw wood with no dips or details turned out nice. If you are a skilled refinished I feel like this would work for you. If your a beginner…not so much unless your making something simple and flat. I used the weathered gray and it's a pretty shade. I'm not confident enough to attempt my curio. I'm glad I tested on the inside of the door.

    Great Color Choices!
Highly recommend this product. It was easy to apply, dries quickly with minimal odor and clean up is a breeze. The stain can be tinted to match any decor. It allows the warmth of the wood grain to show through.

    Easy to use!
This wood stain is a great choice for any deck or front porch project! The coverage was astonishing on the new boards and old boards with no spotting or bleeding of colors. It was easy to apply and did not stink or hurt my nose with the smell. I applied it using a roller and a brush and found it to be easy to use both!

    Beautiful stain
I bought the Semi-Transparent stain tinted Carbonite (1106) for a 5-string bass guitar kit I am building. Using water as a per-conditioner and using a lint free rag to both apply and wipe off the stain, it came out amazing. It did have some happy accidents, mainly around the outside, that added to the cool effect of the stain. I used two coats on the back and sides and one on the front. Next step is putting on a couple coats of Polyacrylic Semi-Gloss finish and it will be ready to build.

    Difficult to use
We recently stained a new table. We started by using the minwax water based preconditioned as directed, and then applying the semi transparent water based stain. It went on very easily, but soaked into the wood too fast and dried too quickly. We were looking to get a lot of grain to show through. The can says to apply and wipe off within 2-4 minutes. The stain had completely soaked in in about 40 seconds. The first coat we let the stain sit for the recommended 2 minutes, but in some places the excess wiped off smoothly, while others the rag pulled up too much or not enough stain, like the stain was a tacky mess. The second coat we did not trust the directions, and instead wiped the stain about 20 seconds after application. This worked better, but still came out splotchy. We ended up sanding the table bare and applying the oil based stain with significantly better results. In the future I will only be using the solid color water based stain to completely dye the wood a specific color.

    Quick easy stain
Very easy to work with on home projects. Little to no odor and when working on large pieces that need stained on both sides, you can just wait roughly an hour and flip and coat the next side. I was able to cover about 30-40 sqft of material with less than a quarter of the can. Only complaint is that it dries a bit too fast and you have to work quickly in small sections to make sure you wipe off the excess before it dries.

    Love this product
Okay where do I begin. I was nervous when selecting a good product for my floor because I'm very picky and I hate products that fade quickly. Well after our flooring was installed I applied this and I love it because it was water based and not oil based so it wasn't so thick and it was really easy to apply. It gave it a beautiful look after it was finished.
