Blah to elegant
I've only used Classic Black, (on kitchen cabinets) which I am guessing must be the easiest color with which to get consistent results. I applied two coats over existing poly. The oak wood grain looks great with the black satin. (Adding crown molding and satin hardware also helped). I believe most disappointed users are not carefully following the recommended application instructions.

Bare wood and finished wood both dry uneven
The stain is uneven when dries. A light even coat is applied but when it dries it's flat and blotchy. The bare wood turned out good but it took a few times of sanding and reapplying. The biggest trouble we're having is the post we picked up
from the lumber store. They where pre finished so we
roughed them up and put a coat on. The stain is acting completely different on the post then it did on the stair caps(bare wood). The stain is like water and dries really fast and uneven. We tried to buff the unevenness out with steel wool but the finish is gone once we get it evened out. Any help would b appreciated, the project is st a stand still.

2.00 out of 5 stars reviewVerified Purchaser11/10/2022Type of wood and previous finish matter A LOTI bought the satin espresso to update a barn door and sofa table in our main living area. The sofa table was a pre finished oak with a light stain and followed the instructions and it came out beautifully. The barn door on the other hand has been a nightmare. Stripped all of the paint off and used pre-stain wood treatment as suggested and still turned out super blotchy. Some places look blood others flat and some satin. Used a quality brush the first time then sanded as recommended and used a staining pad because of the way the first application turned out. Neither did the job and probably going to end up just finding a paint for the door instead. Maybe it was the pine but it looks horrible.dcps650

5.00 out of 5 stars reviewVerified Purchaser08/15/2022So easy to work withI used this stain and poly on a vintage wood tanker desk. I absolutely loved the consistency, and the fact that I don't have to do a 2 step process.The.remix

2.00 out of 5 stars reviewVerified Purchaser07/25/2022Inconsistent color/resultsI've used Bombay Mahogany in Gloss, and Antique Walnut in Satin. The Bombay Mahogany was terrific! Deep color that matched the advertized color, easy application that smoothed out very well and streak free (I used a very good quality brush made specific for the product). The Antique Walnut was a tremendous disappointment. The color is very, very light, and it doesn't match the image on the can. My best description would be it looks as if it had been thinned a whole lot, or a whole lot of color was left out. Bleah. Added photo has a title description which isn't showing up. So, just in case, the Ant. Wal. Satin (two coats) is at lower left; regular Dark Walnut stain (no poly) is at upper right. Major coverage difference.AJGIII

4.00 out of 5 stars reviewVerified Purchaser02/16/2021Great glossy sealI decided a few weeks ago to redo my bathroom cabinets as the original stain and poly were starting to peel. I sanded down the cabinets and headed to the store to figure out a stain and poly. After doing research on which color of stain to do I found out our local stores did not carry this specific Minwax with the stain and poly in one. We choose a colored stain from a different company and used the Minwax poly to seal it in. I was very impressed with ease of application, drying, and gloss of the seal.anderson8187

5.00 out of 5 stars reviewVerified Purchaser02/15/2021Good stainTop piece was before. Goes on easy. I used an old rag to rub on. I prefer a rag to paint brush because it is easier to apply. I used two coats in the pictures. The stain brings out the grains in the wood. I like this stain a lot and plan to use it for other projects.Nlb1126

1.00 out of 5 stars reviewVerified Purchaser05/22/2020Extremely Difficult to ApplyI do not enjoy painting and staining in general, but also am very particular about the quality of the finish, so I sometimes do projects myself to ensure quality outcomes. I chose this product because I found that the new sliding doors I thought only needed varnish to match the room actually required stain. Since I now had a coat of Minwax polyurethane one the wood, I searched for a stain that I could apply over the existing varnish. Enter PolyShades. I wish I had read the reviews first. This product is HORRIBLE to apply, especially on vertical surfaces like a door. It starts out very watery, which runs badly, and then it quickly turns gummy as you try to fix runs, leaving splotchy areas that are darker - once this process starts, you can't recover. Critical mistake on my part was to go back to an area and try to even out the color. I will now have to sand the wood back down, and start over. I want to cut my loses and switch to a regular stain, but now have to worry about color matching the trim that I have to redo with the door frame that actually turned out ok.Stephen

5.00 out of 5 stars reviewVerified Purchaser04/18/2020Looks good but don't paint it on.I use a rag and rug it in to the wood. Rub it in really good and don't let excess sit on the wood and dry. I only use 1 coat.PWMac

1.00 out of 5 stars reviewVerified Purchaser09/16/2019Sheen doesn't match label.I bought two of the satin finish espresso cans. One came out satin, the second is very obviously NOT satin and the can was mislabeled so now I need to sand it down buy another can and start over so the table matches the chairs I already did. Quality control is lacking.Erin n
