The Rainbow Fish
Great story with a great message. My son bought this book for his much younger cousin because he loved this book when he was her age.

Worst children's book ever
This is a really stupid book. Thank goodness it only cost a few bucks. Basically, the fish is not rainbow colored. Also, it is not many colors. It's basically a couple shades of blue, two pinks and the rest silver. It's really dumb. It says he never played with the fish because he thought he was too beautiful. Then he goes on to basically say that he wanted to know why no one wanted to play with him. It would've been more accurate if they wrote that he never wanted to share with the other fish, or that none of the fish wanted to play with him. Lastly, every single photo is of the stupid rainbow fish. The starfish is just as little tiny thing, it doesn't have a face or a feature. There's no scenery just the same fish on every page. Then they do the one picture of the octopus and it's got two tiny eyes and you can barely see anything. Really stupid. Worst children's book ever.

A vain fish with beautiful colorful…
A vain fish with beautiful colorful scales is told, essentially, to solve his unpopularity by giving away his beautiful scales. He does, and is very happy because he made so many other fishes happy. Eh. I was underwhelmed. The book is illustrated beautifully, but the text was uninspiring. And what are we saying, here? That if you're beautiful or special you have to make yourself ugly or the same as everyone else to have friends? Shades of "Harrison Bergeron". The idea that the fish is happy because he saw how happy he made the other fishes is great, but it doesn't really resolve the fundamental problem that was set up: He was vain and thought himself better than everyone else, and so was rude to them. And we're supposed to understand, from the other fish, perhaps that it's okay to put up with people being rude to you so long as they give you shiny stuff? Maybe it's better in the original German. I'll look for other books that do a better job of focusing on "sharing", without sub-themes of conformity and how to buy friendship.

    Skip this one!
Not a great message for kids. Give away your shiny scales and then you will have friends. I would call those false friends. Grandma says no to this one.

    Terrible Lesson
I dont like this book. What are we trying to teach our kids? That if they make themselves less beautiful, people will like them? That if someone admires their shirt or shoes, they should give it to them? Or worse yet, locks of their hair? That we need to buy friendship? That having friends is more important than anything else, including self-worth? Whatever happened to liking someone just the way they are?
