Wonderful show for children
This show promotes friendship, acceptance, and comaraderie. It encourages children to take responsibility for their actions and to work together to solve problems. The characters face many obstacles and create bonds with others whom initially they bore conflict with. It references alternative family homes such as foster families, single parent homes, and the like. Overall I feel this show has excellent values shown. It encourages children to be themselves, it calls for inclusiveness and it is overall fun and engaging. One of the few shows that has come out in recent years that I allow my daughter to watch.

one star for promoting truancy
as a counselor for young people I have watched the two dvds of Spirit Riding Free seasons 1-4 and seasons 5-9. overall this is a very entertaining series and even I as a grown up enjoy the adventure and peril that is a frequent element of the episodes. But the one thing I cannot ignore is the constant poor influences, behaviors and examples that the protagonists frequently set. For one thing truancy behavior has occurred at least 4 if not more times in the entire two dvds. Usually there is a good reason for it,  but in the last episode of this dvd The New Frontier part 2 the issue of truancy is so greatly overlooked if not also encouraged. for those who don't know what I'm talking about I will try to quickly summarize it. the school for the protagonists has changed teachers and only teaches up to 8th grade. Therefore the protagonists must all go to a boarding school far away,  but the main character PAL's horse must have horse shoes to be accepted there and he does not allow himself to be shod so therefore he cannot go. the main protagonist then makes the difficult decision to go to the school by herself,  but then no sooner the train ride is interrupted by Spirit whom she then proceeds to ride home and basically the episode ends on the note that family and friends and adventures are much more important than school. And especially because it ends with the other now truant protagonists saying "be ready for a great summer!" which further reinforces the negative message. they could not even manage to mention a "we'll talk about the school later" the show in of itself seems to contain many negative messages. The theme of the show is about being passionately free and innocent as well as carefree and following one's heart and finding his or her own way in the world and not letting others tell you what to do. While these attributes are good to teach to young children it is also very easy to teach it in a dangerous and self destructive way that this show does. The protagonists frequently get into trouble if not also causing a lot of it themselves. and severe breaking of the rules and even stealing and lying behaviors which occur in some episodes are often accepted or even rewarded when circumstances are bad enough. add to the fact that a minor supporting  character Julian who is a lying con-boy repeatedly does not truly recognize the serious possible consequences of his lying and how it hurts those around him,  even though he always has to explain himself and confess to his bad choices in the end and eventually sometimes does the right thing. There needs to be an episode where he truly and finally gets the bigger message once and for all.

    This show is fantastic!!
This show is fantastic! Keep in mind that it is set in the 19th century, where mandatory school attendance was relatively new. With just about ANY kids movie/show you're going to be exposed to bad/negative behaviors along with the good/positive ones. The age that the protagonists are at, is the age of testing the waters. Of course they're going to skip class, or make poor choices. We've all been there. It's that age. Sometimes it is a little bit on the extreme side, but that makes for a good show. It's not coming across as promoting, but rather is taking negative actions/experiences and using them for a storyline. If you're a horse lover, or country person you'll appreciate this show. It's not going to corrupt your child by any means. :)
